River's Edge Golf Club (www.river18.com) is an Arnold Palmer Signature Course. The course gets its name from its location on the Shallotte River. For scenic beauty, River's Edge is hard to top. The signature hole of River's Edge is the par 5, 570 yard 9th hole. The right side of the fairway is lined with trees and the river runs the entire length of the left side of the hole and cuts through the fairway about 200 yards from the green. The green is on a peninsula that juts out into the river. Tempted to go for the green in two? Just ask Arnie ... he hit two balls in the water trying to reach in two! Carolina National Golf Club (www.carolinanatl.com), a 27-hole Freddie Couples Signature Course features some of the most scenic holes in the Carolinas. Natural wetlands, dramatic elevation changes, and tree-lined fairways define the three nine-hole tracks (Egret, Ibis, and Heron). The signature hole, the 203 yard par 3 fifth hole on the Heron Course has to be seen to be believed. Golfers must carry a marsh to a peninsula green guarded on three sides by bunkers. Beautiful Bald Head Island Golf Club (www.bhigolf.com) completes this package. Any day that starts and ends with a boat ride and has golf in between is going to be a great one. You'll take the ferry from Southport, NC, to Bald Head Island, where you'll play 18 holes on a public course, but you'll swear you're playing your own private country club.
